The underlying mechanism of AntiFrost involves strengthening plant cell walls, reducing ice nucleation within the plant structure, and maintaining metabolic activity under cold stress conditions. This means forestry companies can improve seedling establishment rates, ensuring healthier plantations and more predictable growth cycles.

What is AntiFrost®?

AntiFrost is a natural biostimulant designed to enhance plant resistance to cold and frost. It achieves this by stimulating the production of anti-freeze proteins within the plant, which prevent ice nucleation and, consequently, cold and frost damage.

The product contains various cultivated bacteria and their metabolites, including rusticyanin, oxaloacetic acid, and pyruvic acid, combined with a special blend of minerals. When applied, AntiFrost is absorbed through the stomata of leaves, stems, and roots, stimulating photosynthesis and the plant’s Krebs Cycle. This process leads to the production of the plant’s own anti-freeze proteins and glycoproteins, which interact with the water within plant cells to reduce or stop ice nucleation, thereby preventing cell rupture and death.

After the period of cold and frost stress, any surplus anti-freeze proteins are converted into sugars, oils, vitamins, and proteins, which the plant then utilizes. This stimulates the growth of more buds and foliage, increasing the quality and yield of the plant. The effect of each application can last up to 14 days, with peak effectiveness within 48 hours post-application.

Key factors for optimal AntiFrost application:

  • Nurture: Multiple applications throughout the growth cycle or throughout the year leading up to the frost will maximise the plant’s resistance. We recommend that most plants receive an application once every two weeks as the stimulation of producing anti-freeze proteins can have compounding effects.
  • Timing: All applications with the intention of frost protection should be made prior to forecasted cold and frosty weather. The optimal time to apply the last application is 48 hours before the frost. After 48 hours from application, the plant has its peak number of anti-freeze proteins, ensuring the greatest increase in resistance.
  • Dosage: For most crops, we recommend that the product is diluted to 0.5% with water [1L AntiFrost with 200L water]. The water should be unchlorinated, as to not harm the bacteria, and with a pH7 or below. If you wish to mix AntiFrost with other inputs, please contact us to check the compatibility.
  • Quantity: The number of litres of AntiFrost per hectare depend on the crop type, climate, and geology. For accurate application advice please contact us.
  • Trial: We always recommend that growers try the product on a small sample area first before applying to the entire crop. As a biostimulant, AntiFrost relies on the plant’s ability to produce its own anti-freeze proteins in response to the product, which can vary based on environmental factors.
