Avoid Sleepless Nights with AntiFrost®

While most look forward to the beauty of spring, for some it is a time of anxiety as with the warmth of spring, plants aren’t expecting to suddenly freeze-over.

Unfortunately, with climate change, average spring temperatures are rising, and so plants are blooming earlier. This makes them more vulnerable to sudden frosts and means when they occur, the consequences are often devastating.

In 2021, spring frosts reportedly cost France alone a loss of around €2 Billion in their viticulture and horticulture industries as some areas of land had seen a “near wipe out” in their yield. This led the French government to declare a state of emergency allowing them to release funding to support growers. This is because in a “black frost” traditional methods of frost protection, such as bougies and irrigation did not suffice.

White Frost”, where only certain pockets of the land are affected, are not so difficult to protect against.

Black Frost”, however, is an air frost which farmers typically believe there is no remedy for. This is because a “black frost” is caused by a moving mass of air which is usually a temperature below 0°C and so can rapidly change the air temperature surrounding crops in a matter of minutes. As the change is so sudden, it is near impossible for farmers to immediately begin protecting their crops by means of heating or irrigation, as these methods require a period of start-up before being effective.

This is why farmers around the world use AntiFrost® or a product from its range. AntiFrost® is a natural biostimulant which activates the plant’s own cold and frost defences prior to the period of frost risk, so when the event does occur, the plant is in a hibernation-like state and so has resistance to cold and frost damage.

AntiFrost® does this by stimulating the production of anti-freeze proteins within the plant, which prevent ice nucleation, and hence the rupture and death of plant cells.

If the frost event does not occur, the surplus anti-freeze proteins, along with the absorbed minerals, will become beneficial ingredients for the plant to improve its health and growth. This commonly leads to an increase in buds and foliage for the plant. Who doesn’t want that?

Avoid sleepless nights and protect pre-emptively with a choice from our AntiFrost® range.
